Personally, I've lost interest in the awards over the years, and so will most likely be tuning out. I haven't seen most of the nominated films, so I don't really care that much who wins.
Plus, not to sound like a sourpuss, but the whole way the awards ceremony is carried out has just gotten irritating over the years.
There will be a bunch of unnecessary built up tension over who will win best assistant sound editing or some such, followed by overly long gratitude speeches; the host will make many woefully unsuccessful attempts at humor in between awards; special guests will come out one after another giving long-winded talks about how movies are not just a potentially enlightening form of entertainment but Holy Prophecies from God Himself; there will be one or more obligatory speeches congratulating actors' and directors' brave efforts at political dissent, which in Bush's America carries the grave risk of being laughed at by AM talk-radio hosts and their redneck audiences; and in between it all annoying off-key celebrity performances of the nominated best song.
Now yes, that can be interesting to know which of the nominated films won best picture, and there are definaely some excellent ones in there (Babel, The Departed, Letters from Iwo Jima, Little Miss Sunshine, and The Queen). It's also nice to see the winner of this year;s lifetime achievement awards, and the accompanying tribute/review of their work. Many great thespians including Meryl Streep, Judi Dench, Will Smith and Forest Whitaker will go home with some well-deserved recognition for their performances this year. But I could just as easily read this in the papers the next day. Why devote three plus hours to this thing?
But at any rate, this might just as well be a case of me being a spoilsport and no fun.
What about you guys? Will you watch the awards? And who do you think will/should win?
Devious Comments
1) I hate the Academy Awards. They really mean nothing to me as I've become disillusioned with them over the years.
2) I don't have cable

I'm not against having awards ceremonies for films, I mean we have them for TV shows and music. People can have a legitimate interest in watching.
But the Emmy's and the Music Awards aren't so friggin pompous about it! For some reason the folks at the Oscar's seem to act so seriously, like they're the arbiters of civilization or something.
